Hülya Denizalp Demircan: Susan Davis ile söyleyişimizi sürdürüyoruz. Susan’dan geçen hafta yaşadıkları tecrübeleri anlatmasını istemiştik ve en iyi çözümlerin yaşadığı tecrübeler içerisinde neler olduğunu sormuştuk. Bize tecrübelerini aktarırken zamanımız yetmemişti... Bu hafta devam ediyoruz.
Ok Susan, you were telling us the best practice of citizen sector, civil society solution in the last program. Do you want to continue on that issue or do you want to share different experiences with us? Women, education, social entrepreneurship... We are listening to you. What would you like to tell us more about the United States or different countries? Let me ask one specific question: You worked in Bangladesh and the United States. Have you been to other countries for civil service?
Susan Davis: Oh yes. I think I have been to more than half the countries of the world. I have traveled everywhere, every continent except Antarctica. We have not made it there yet but I have been working for 20 years and meeting with grassroot groups, citizen activists. These are peddlers of hope, makers of dreams, people who are constructing real solutions to urgent problems. What I have learned is that another world is possible. It is possible through the efforts of the people. That is the real power. The power of ideas; gppd ideas spreading around the world and the power of people in being able to role up their sleeves and get involved. I was just in Brazil in I guess it was January. I do not know if you have heard about the World Social Forum but it happens at the same that Davos – the World Economic Forum happens. And this is people’s response. More than a 100,000 of us were there from all around the world more than 150 countries all trying to show that another world is possible – different from the world the corporations and the governments are handing us.
HDD: Eda’dan tercümeyi almadan –Eda bize bu hafta da çeviride yardımcı oluyor sağolsun–, ben özel bir soru sordum Susan’a, yine tecrübelerini anlatmasını isterken. Tamam, Amerika ve Bangladeş’te bulundun ama başka hangi ülkelerde, sosyal çalışmalarda sorumluluklar aldın, dedim... Dünyanın yarısı, değil mi, Eda? Senden dinleyelim neler yapmış ve neler düşünmüş bu yaptıkları sonucunda.
Eda Cerrahoğlu: 20 yıldır sizin de dediğiniz gibi dünyanın yarısını gezmiş. Kendisi diyor ki ‘Antarktika’ya henüz gidemedim.’ Bütün sivil toplum kuruluşlarında en önemli gücün insanların emeğinin olduğunu, insanların katılımı olduğunu söylüyor. Mesela geçtiğimiz Ocak’ta Brezilya’da Dünya Sosyal Forumu’na gitmiş. Bu Davos’ta yapılan Dünya Ekonomi Forumu ile aynı zamanda oluyor, alternatif olarak. 100,000’den fazla insan gelmiş bu foruma 150 ülkeden, ve bunları gördükten sonra diyor ki Susan Davis, şirketlerin ve devletlerin bize sunduğundan daha farklı bir dünya aslında insanların emeği ve katılımı ile mümkün olabilir. Buna inanıyor.

Another world is possible
SD: You know the one thing that I have observed Hülya is that just chasing money does not bring people happiness. I come from probably the most affluent society in the world and certainly the US is acting like it is the only super power. Of course the rest of the world is trying to tie down this Gulliver so that we learn how to behave and don’t trample on the rest of the world. But when you are dealing not with the level of the government and you are dealing with people, I have noticed that people have a great capacity to understand and be empathetic towards each other and it is this empathetic ethics that is at the heart of the Global Women’s Movement. Women are so different; all over the world we have different customs and cultures and races and ethnicities. But we were able to come together and find unified agendas to solve some of the most vaccine problems around the world. That gives me real hope. I have seen this happen right here in Turkey as well and I thing from the wisdom of housewives, from the wisdom of mothers, from the courage of daughters we are also seeing that another world is possible.
HDD: Bir tercüme yapmanın zamanı galiba...
EC: Evet. Susan Davis diyor ki, kendisi Amerika gibi çok zengin ve şu anda dünyanın tek süper gücü gibi davranan ülkesinden gelmesine rağmen, para mutluluk getirmiyor insanlara. İnsanların, diyor, devletlerden farklı olarak birbirlerini anlama güçleri var. Ve bu anlama gücü ile değişim yaratılabilir. Mesela örnek veriyor: Dünya Kadınlar Hareketi’nde çok değişik kesimlerden, kültürlerden, ülkelerden bir sürü kadın birlik olup en zor sorunlara bile çözüm buluyorlar ve bunun umut verici olduğunu söylüyor. Türkiye’de de bunun örneklerini görmüş kendisi. Girişimci ev hanımlarını görmüş ve bütün bunları gördükten sonra, diyor ki, çok daha değişik ve çok daha güzel bir dünya aslında mümkün.
SD: Let me give some examples of what I mean. You know if I said ‘Hülya quick look next door there is somebody dying’, immediately we would stop this radio program and rush to save the life of this person. Right? When we talk about statistics and the hundreds of millions billions of people suffering these quiet lives of desperation that do not get enough to eat every day, we go numb. But luckily not everybody goes numb. Some women have figured out the way how to use very small credit and savings to be able to put money in the hands of people; to be able to create their own source of income generation and that is what this micro credit is all about. Here in Turkey, the Foundation for the Support of Working Women, a fantastic Turkish woman has responded at the earthquake area with this idea of small loans for being able to help people to help them to lift themselves out of poverty; put food in the mouths of their hungry children. Because you know that mothers cannot turn off the cries of their children, they have to find a way to put food on the table.

EC: Bir örnek veriyor; mesela şimdi bu program süresinde yan tarafta birinin öldüğünü duysak, hemen bu programı bırakıp yardıma koşarız, diyor. Dünyada bütün gelir dağılımı istatistiklerine baktığımızda, bazılarımız uyuşuyor bu kötülüklerin karşısında ama, Allah’tan bazı insanlar da uyuşmuyor, diyor.

HD: Orda uyuşmaktan kastı...
EC: Ne yapacağını bilememek. Bu mikro kredi programından örnek veriyor mesela. Bir sürü insan çok az bir kredi ile yoksullara, kadınlara çocuklarını doyurmaları için veya kendi gelirlerini sağlayabilmeleri için imkân veriyor, diyor.
SD: I have also heard of another group and met a few of the people from KAMER working in Eastern Turkey who have put together fantastic programs to organize women with different business ventures I think with restaurants, with child care, with looking at other ways to earn money as well as to confront the problem of violence. To help women stop the abuse at home and be able to stand up and empower themselves.
EC: Türkiye’nin güneydoğusundan örnek veriyor. Diyor ki, kadınlar restoran veya çocuk bakımı sektörlerinde girişimde bulunuyorlar. Ayrıca da, kadınların girişimci oldukları evlerinde kendi güçlerini, kendi seslerini duyurmak ve erkeklerin karşısında ezilmemek... Daha güçlü olmak, kendi ayaklarının üzerinde durmak...
SD: And of course it is not just women taking action. I have met one of the most impressive young men in your country who has really brought the organized sustainable agricultural revolution right to the heartland. Agriculture is so important to Turkey’s economy and of course the more you learn about the environment and the way the corporate agriculture poisons the earth, the soil, the water supply system and ultimately it gets into our bodies. Of course it is alarming. In the US luckily we have woken up to the importance of organic agriculture and the link between the environment and health. It was heartening to see that there has been a very quiet and steady lawyer trying to introduce these ideas of environmental health from the seeds to the table in Turkey. I do not know if you know this magazine. I think every person in Turkey who wants to be a part of it should read it. ‘Buğday’ I think it means weed. Fantastic, really inspiring. I also know about an apple farmer who has introduces a sustainable way to grow and harvest apples which is at the heart of Turkish agriculture. If you can do it for one crop, you can do it for many. And she is a really articulate champion of what a healthy environment can be and also good economics. You can make money as well as make a good living as well as be good to the environment and the consumers in Turkey. It is fantastic and it is the future worldwide.
EC: Susan Davis diyor ki, sadece kadınlar değil Türkiye’de girişimci olanlar. Bir örnek veriyor mesela çok genç bir avukat...
HDD: Viktor Ananias tahmin ediyorum. Is he... Viktor?
SD: Yes.
EC: Evet. Bu genç avukat ekolojik tarım ile ilgileniyor anladığım kadarı ile.
Organik elmaya dönüşün öncüsü
HDD: Buğday Dergisi’ni ben de biliyorum. Sadece tarım değil, ekolojik yaşam ile ilgili yazı ve makalelerle dolu. Nasıl yaşarsak sağlıklı bir toplum ve sağlıklı bir çevre içinde yaşarızı göstermek için. Bu arada eğer duymamış olanlar varsa Buğday Dergisi’ni, ben de öneriyorum. Susan’ın bütün bu bilgileri bilmesine de bu arada hayret ediyorum ve saygı duyuyorum tabii.
EC: Başka bir örnek de bir elma çiftçiliği üzerine. O da ekolojik ve, diyor ki, biz Amerika’da yeni bu konularla ilgilenmeye başladık. Türkiye’de bu konuların bizden daha önce ele alınmış olması çok güzel, çok umut verici. Yani insanlar hem çevreyi koruyup aynı zamanda da para kazanabilirler. İyi ve temiz bir çevrede para kazanarak yaşayabilirler.
HDD: Ben de bu arada bu elma yetiştirici Yasemin Kılıç hakkında bir şeyler eklemek istiyorum. Yasemin Marmaris’te yaşarken demiş ki “Ben anlamlı bir şey yapmak istiyorum, turizm bana cazip gelmiyor, anlamlı bir şey yapayım” ve kalkmış, Türkiye’de elmanın çok önemli olduğunu araştırmış bulmuş. Online olarak Almanya’dan ekolojik tarım eğitimi almış. Ben de bunu bu vesile ile anlatayım, çünkü beni de çok heyecanlandıran bir kişi oldu Yasemin. Türkiye’de nerede elma yetiştirebilirim, diye araştırmış. Isparta’nın bu konu için çok uygun olduğunu tespit etmiş. Zaten Isparta’nın Eğridir Bölgesi’nde elma yetiştiriciliğinin yapıldığı ve doğal tarım için -yani bizim yıllar önce terk ettiğimiz, artık bu geri kalmış dediğimiz tarıma tekrar dönülecek- yerin Isparta Eğridir olduğunu tespit etmiş. 5 senedir orada. Elma yetiştirmek değil, nasıl elma yetiştirilir diye kendisi örnek oluyor. Dağın başına gitmiş kadın, yani inanamıyorum hakikaten fantastik. Yani ne denir ona...
EC: Muhteşem.
HDD: Evet muhteşem. Ben de heyecanlandım, kusura bakmayın. Bu örnekleri görmek, Susan’ın dediği gibi insana ümit veriyor. Sen sözünü bitirmiş miydin?
EC: Evet, ben sözümü bitirdim.
HDD: Böyle insanları tanımak sanırım herkesi heyecanlandıracaktır. OK Susan, we are listening to you with pleasure.
SD: I have so many stories I can tell you Hülya because I have met so many amazing people here in Turkey. I am really impressed with the spirit and the determination. You know when you come here as a tourist, you see all these kids on the street sometimes asking for money or want to wash your windshield. Well I asked if anybody was doing anything to save these kids. And you may know of Yusuf Kulca. It is that kind of a response creating solutions and working close with the government, the business, gives a lot of opportunities for people to volunteer. It really helps the children from different parts of Turkey; how to get them in, meet their needs and how to restore love and hope in their lives. It is a fundamental human right you know for children.
EC: Susan Davis diyor ki hikâyeleri çok. Çok değişik insanlarla tanışmış Türkiye’ye geldiği defalarda. Turist olarak ilk geldiğinde trafikte arabaların camlarını yıkamak isteyen, para isteyen bir sürü çocuk görmüş ve sormuş insanlara, kimse bunlar için bir şey yapıyor mu diye...
HDD: Turistken bile sosyal düşünmüş.
Sorumluluk alın!
EC: Ve görmüş ki Yusuf Bey bu işe eğilmiş zaten. Umut Çocukları Derneği sanırım. Diyor ki bu gibi girişimler, yani çözüm bulan girişimler devletle ve şirketlerle elbirliği içerisinde yapılan girişimler hem toplumu ileri götürüyor, hem de gönüllülere de çok imkânlar sağlıyor. Türkiye’nin değişik tarafından gelen çocukları nasıl okullara yerleştirebilirler, gelirlerini nasıl yükseltebilirler ve en önemlisi de çocuklara sevgi ve umut nasıl verilebilir, çünkü çocuklar için en önemli olan bu, diyor Susan Davis.
HDD: Ama tabii bu arada kendisinin görmediği bir şey, şu anda sokak çocukları ile ilgilenen daha bir çok dernek kuruldu, vakıf kuruldu.
SD: And it is also people with disabilities or different kind of abilities I see in Turkey people taking innovative and creative responses, people who are artistic in fact or people who are struggling with different types of handicaps. Since I am using a cane I have become this week acutely aware of the needs of people with different kind of physical disabilities and it is great to see pioneers in Turkey coming up with innovative solutions.
EC: Otistikler Derneği’nden de söz ediyor. Oradan da örnek veriyor. Türkiye’de çok onların ihtiyaçlarına yönelmeye ihtiyaç var. Ve diyor ki, kendi tecrübelerinden gördüğü kadarı ile buna da eğilen çok girişimci var ve bundan da çok mutlu.
HD: Yine bir programımız bitmek üzere. Yine konu bitmedi. Susan Davis ile bitmesi mümkün değil. Ama biz artık daha fazla kendisini alıkoyamayacağız. Susan, what would you like to add about Turkish civil society?
SD: Well you know the first time I came here was for the Habitat Conference in 1996 when Turkey rolled out the red carpet for the world and brought all of the activists who were concerned about making livable cities and livable communities. And what I saw is the growth of civil society in Turkey but unfortunately it took an earthquake to really shake people out of being passive and pushing people to volunteer and to be active constructors of the society that they want to live in. And I would just encourage people to not wait for another earthquake to get involved; the social earthquakes are enough. It is a wonderful thing being back here Hülya and I really appreciate the invitation.

EC: İlk defa 1996’da Habitat için gelmiş ve ondan beridir sivil toplum kuruluşlarında çok büyük bir ilerleme görmüş. Ama diyor ki, bir deprem sayesinde insanlar Türkiye’de pasiflikten uzaklaşıp aktif bir hale geldiler. Ve artık başka bir deprem olmasını beklemeyin; sosyal depremler zaten yeterli, yani çevrenizi ve içinde yaşamak istediğiniz toplumu yaratmak için aktif bir biçimde çalışın.
